What Would Jesus Say?

July 21, 2024

With the assassination attempt of Donald Trump last Saturday, the folks on the political right felt relieved because Trump wasn’t seriously injured. However, some of the folks on the other side of the aisle immediately took to social media with posts that ranged anywhere from snarky to horrible. Two of the worst ones I saw said, “We were just a few inches away from freedom” and “He’s been asking for it, I’m sorry the shooter was an inch or so off.” Before I go any further, full disclosure, my political position on most issues tends to lean to the right. With that being said, when I listened to talk radio on Monday, the airwaves were full of conservative leaning people letting the folks on the other side have it over their lack of sensitivity. While I read and heard some pretty evil things about Trump and the assassination attempt, I can’t help but wonder if the situation was reversed and someone had attempted to assassinate Joe Biden, if the people on the right would have been just as snarky and evil as the left has been. I would hope not, but I am not very confident. That is where we are as a society today. I haven’t said much about this for a couple of reasons. For one thing, others have said plenty, and second, I wanted to reflect and ponder a bit before I said anything publicly. Here are just a couple of thoughts. While I am thankful Mr. Trump wasn’t seriously injured, the shooter didn’t miss. When the incident was over, two people were killed and two others were injured. Later that evening after the shooting stopped and the first responders and news crews had gone on to the next thing, a brave man’s daughters wouldn’t be tucked in by their dad and a wife wouldn’t be kissed goodnight by her husband. On the other side of town, a father and mother wouldn’t say goodnight to their son and would just begin dealing with the fact that the son they loved had killed someone, wounded three others, and would always be remembered as the man who tried to kill Donald Trump. I even saw someone post on Facebook something referring to Corey Comperatore, the man killed while protecting his wife and daughters. The post said, “Well that’s one less MAGA the country has to deal with.” I wonder how many people feel that way. I wonder how many people on both sides of the political aisle have so much hatred in their hearts for the “other side” that instead of seeing people who are husbands, wives, men, women, boys, girls, bosses, neighbors and friends, they are seen as the nameless, faceless, “other side.” God have mercy on us. God help us to see people as people, (even those people who are different than us), and not enemies.

Be blessed and be a blessing . . . Bro. Andy
