Do Good, But Don’t Lose Heart

Marie and I are watching a TV series titled Cold Case Files. The show’s name pretty well explains its premise. While the facts around each case are different, most often, somewhere during the episode, someone will say that the victim didn’t deserve to die in the manner he or she did. Every time I hear that statement, I think to myself, nobody deserves to die in that manner. Well, except for maybe the boy who came up behind me and pulled my pants down in front of my entire second-grade class while we were on the playground. I learned early, and you probably did too, that we live in a world full of meanness, selfishness, and downright evil. Do you ever ask yourself why you try to be good and do good? After all, it would be so much easier to just give in, join the crowd, and do what everybody else is doing. After all, swimming against the current is hard, and you get tired quickly. If you are like me, perhaps you sometimes wonder whether the little bit of good you try to do even makes a difference in the big picture. Here is a Bible verse that might help us keep on keeping on. “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart” Galatians 6:9, NKJV. I suppose that in between beatings, stonings, shipwrecks, and snakebites, Paul must have gotten discouraged trying to do good in a world that was fighting against him every step of the way. He must have realized his readers were discouraged, too, because he wrote this little sentence of encouragement to lift them up. Let’s break down Paul’s statement. He encourages us not to get tired of doing good. Why? Because in “due season” we will reap if we don’t lose heart or give up. There is a promise and a statement made in the last part of that verse. The promise is that we will reap if we keep on sowing. The statement tells us when we will reap.  We will reap in due season or at the right time. You ask, well, when is the right time? That’s above our pay grade. God is in charge of the seasons, isn’t He? Our time and God’s time are often two different things. Our job is to keep doing good and keep sowing, even when we are tired, because when God is ready, the harvest will appear. Here’s one more thing to consider. While the little deeds of kindness we do for others might not change the world, they just might change the world for the person who received that kindness. So, keep swimming against the current and let God use whatever kindness you show to someone for His glory.

Now, be Blessed and then go be a Blessing . . . Bro Andy
