Waiting for the True Treasure

The older I get, the more I appreciate Simeon. You can read his story in Luke 2:25-35. Luke tells us Simeon was righteous, devout and we can assume from the text, old. Luke also tells us Simeon was waiting. Turns out, the Holy Spirit revealed to Simeon that he wouldn’t die until he had seen the Consolation of Israel (God’s Messiah). So everyday Simeon hung out at the temple, waiting for God’s Messiah to show up. He knew that faithful Jews came to the temple early and often and if he waited in God’s house, Messiah would come to him. By the way, these ten verses are all we know about Simeon. We don’t know anything about his life prior to this point, nor do we know what happened after these verses. But do you know what? These ten verses are enough to tell us what we need to know about Simeon. First, Simeon was persistent. He showed up all day, every day. He didn’t think, “well, I won’t go to the temple today, after all, what are the chances of Messiah showing up today. After all, it’s raining outside and every time the weather turns bad, my knee flares up, so I’m just gonna stay home today.” No, Simeon was persistent. God told him he was going to see Messiah and he was determined to do just that. What about us? How persistent are we when it comes to our Christian walk? Are we hit or miss or are we determined to walk after Jesus all day, every day? Second, we learn where Simeon’s heart was. He was looking for Messiah. That’s what his life was all about. Jesus tells us in His Sermon of the Mount, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Again, what about us? What are we looking for? Is our focus on our heavenly home (God’s true “Promised Land”) or are we focused on earthly things? Simeon knew where his allegiance lay, and his actions showed it. Our actions reveal the same thing to us. Those things we pursue, and chase reveal our hearts. Finally, after Simeon held Jesus, he said, “Now I can die in peace because I’ve seen God’s Messiah.” Simeon met Jesus, and for Simeon, that was enough. The older I get, the more I appreciate Simeon because the older I get the more I realize Jesus is enough. My houses make me comfortable. My clothes keep me warm. My food fills my belly. But Jesus makes me alive, and that’s enough for me. I pray it’s enough for you as well.

Be blessed and then go be a blessing . . . Bro. Andy
