Have you ever gotten down on yourself when you messed up…again? The idea of sanctification, or becoming more like Christ, is sometimes maddeningly frustrating. We want to do the right thing, the holy thing, but sometimes we don’t. On the other hand, we don’t want to do the sinful thing, but alas, sometimes we do. And when we do, Satan whispers in our ear, “If you were really saved, if you were really a child of God, you wouldn’t have said this, or done this, or failed to do that.” I read a verse this morning in my devotional that I think will be helpful to us as we climb back into the saddle for another day of kingdom work. “He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it” I Thess. 5:24. There are a couple of questions that immediately come to mind after reading this verse. First, what will He do? He will sanctify us wholly. See the previous verse. He will keep on working in us to purify us, one day at a time, until one day, we are perfect in every way. Unfortunately, that day won’t come on this side of eternity, but grant it, it will come. According to Paul, He will preserve our “whole spirit, and soul, and body, blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” He will not allow us to fall out of His hand. The second question is, who will do this? Jesus Christ, that’s who. We have neither the power to save ourselves nor the power to keep ourselves saved. Only Jesus Christ can do this. Our being saved and staying saved can only come by God’s grace. That’s why it’s called Amazing Grace! One more question. Why will He do it? Because He is “faithful.” God is faithful to His own promise to save the believer. It boils down to this. It is not our own faithfulness, but the Lord’s faithfulness, on which we rely. So, it isn’t a matter of us being holy so we can stay saved. It is a matter of our surrendering our will to the will of God and allowing God to do His work in our hearts. We need a change of motivation. We don’t do the right thing to keep God from being mad at us, but we do the right thing because God loved us enough to die for us, and because we love Him, we want to please Him. Not to earn His love, but to show our love to Him. So dear brothers and sisters, get back in the saddle, keep on keeping on, one day, we will be home, and God will have finished His work in us, and THAT is good news!
Be blessed and be a blessing . . . Bro. Andy
