As it turned out, the Super Bowl wasn’t exactly super. While I suppose most of America was happy the Eagles won, a good game would have been nice. Yesterday (Monday), there was more discussion on my social media feeds about the halftime show than there was about the game. Like politics, it seems you either liked the show, or you didn’t like the show. There was very little middle ground. And as with politics (or most any other subject) the disagreement was neither kind nor was it gentle. I didn’t see the halftime show, and honestly, I’m glad I didn’t, but after reading some of the comments, I came away with one big question. If you didn’t like it, why watch it? I don’t think anyone was forced to watch it. I mean, even if you weren’t in charge of the remote, you had an option to get up and go refill your popcorn, chip bowl, dip, or beverage. After all, at any given moment, there are about a bazillion channels on our TV’s. When I was growing up, for the most part we had three choices, CBS, NBC, or ABC. For those of us in Middle Tennessee that translated to channels 5, 4 and 2. IF you had the right kind of antenna, you could get channel 17. That was pretty much it, other than channel 8. On channel 8 you could watch exciting shows like eating habits of the dodo bird. We were happy to have those options, but if the President was on, He was on every channel. If you didn’t want to see him, you were out of luck, duck. But even back then, if you didn’t want to watch the President, you could simply turn off the TV. Bottom line, you were in charge of what you watched, and you still are. If you don’t like what is on, turn it off. There is power in changing the channel. It seems in our world today, we would rather complain than change anything. Just like we have the power to control what we watch on TV, we also have control over what we allow into our minds. Paul puts in this way in Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report...meditate on these things.” If you are a Christ follower, you should be thinking on these types of things. It matters what we watch and what we listen to. Remember, if you don’t like what’s on, you have the power to change the channel!
Be blessed and go be a blessing . . . Bro. Andy
