God Can Fix Any Heart

October 13, 2024

In preparing this week’s sermon on the beatitude “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God”, a couple of verses from the Psalms have really stayed with me. Psalm 139:23-24 tells us “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts and see if there be any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.” Asking God to search our hearts might seem sort of like asking a cat to inspect a mouse hole, but upon further review, we will find David’s request makes perfect sense, and we should follow his lead in asking. Scripture tells us that David was a “man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22). David wasn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, in fact he committed sins that had terrible consequences, so what dies God mean when He says David had a heart like His? These two verses in Psalm 139 explain this paradox. David knew he couldn’t trust his heart because his heart would deceive him. David understood that he needed God to search his heart, peel back the layers, and reveal those things inside of him that were ungodly. Guess what, we need to ask God to do the same thing. So many people today say, “just follow your heart.” Y’all, your heart will get you in trouble! Hopefully, the longer we walk with God, the more He has molded and shaped our hearts to be like His, but this side of eternity, our hearts can lead us astray. There is a second part to David’s request that we should examine. Not only did David ask God to search his heart, when God showed David the ungodly parts of his heart and his character, in Psalm 51:7, David asked God to wash His heart and make him clean. Although David sinned, and some of his sins were whoppers, when God pointed them out to David, David was quick to repent and confess those sins and get his heart right with God. How about us? Do we hang on to our sins? God can’t cleanse us if we don’t let go. Finally in Psalm 51:10, David requests that God would create a new heart in him. He wanted a heart like God’s heart. Apparently, God granted that request! Did you know God is still in the searching, cleansing, and creating business? The Great Physician wants to heal your heart trouble today. Will you let Him?

Be blessed and then go be a blessing . . . Bro. Andy
