Defeating the Giants in Your Life

There they were, one army on one hillside and another army on the other. The hillsides had a valley running right smack through the middle of them. The name of the valley was Elah. Elah was in Israel, God’s Country. One army belonged to Israel, the other to the Philistines. The story under consideration in I Samuel 17 features a big, mean Philistine giant named Goliath. Goliath was about nine feet tall and had hairy arms, hairy legs, a hairy chest, and he wore a hairy hat with big horns on the sides. Actually, that isn’t quite accurate. I’m not sure about all the hair, and he didn’t have a hairy hat, but he did have armor. Lots of it. His bronze breastplate weighed 125 pounds, and armor covered his arms and legs. He walked around with a war spear slung over his back. The spearhead weighed 15 pounds. Goliath had so much armor that he had his own armor-carrier that he took along with him every day to tote everything. Every day, this mean, tough warrior would come out and holler over to the Israelite army, camped out on the other hillside. He told them to send out their best warrior to fight him in a winner take all battle. As you can imagine, the volunteers were scarce. So scarce that they were nonexistent. This went on day after day for forty days. The problem was that the Israelites' faith had given way to doubt. Even though the Israelites had once seen God divide a sea for them to escape Pharaoh’s army. The ancestors of these Israelites saw God feed them manna every day and turn a rock into a water fountain…twice. The people gave a holy shout, and the walls of Jericho fell down. God handed over the Promised Land to His chosen people. In spite of all of this, at this moment in time, these Israelites didn’t believe God was strong enough to lift even one of them up in victory over this heathen giant. It wasn’t that they didn’t believe in God. It was just that their faith had given way to doubt. It took a seventeen-year-old boy popping this giant between the eyes with a rock to remind them that their God was big…even big enough to whoop a hairy-chested giant. He’s even big enough to help you defeat the giant that has stolen your faith and replaced it with doubt. The giant of fear. The giant of anger. The giants of rejection, addiction, and failure. The answer is YES; He can help you defeat even THAT giant! But first, you must be willing to show up for the battle.
Be blessed and then go be a blessing . . . Bro. Andy
