Jesus Can Fill Your Emptiness

Perhaps the conversation Marie and I have more than any other revolves around where we're going to eat and what we are going to eat. Often, this conversation starts right after we finish eating. As we walk out of Hardee’s, both of us having just finished a breakfast biscuit, I ask Marie, “What do you want for lunch?” She replies, “I’m not hungry right now. I just finished breakfast.” I then say, “I don’t mean for us to eat right now. I’m just asking you what you want to do for lunch, you know, later?” She then says, “I don’t know. What do you want?” This conversation about lunch can go on and on indefinitely, right up until lunchtime. And then, right after lunch, we usually have the same conversation over again, only this time the conversation is about supper. Y’all might be laughing at us right about now, but I suspect we aren’t the only couple asking each other these questions. My verse of the day today has a little something to say about our endless quest for food. “Jesus replied, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35. Wouldn’t it be great to never be hungry or thirsty again? Why are we humans, Christians included, always hungry? And not just for food either. We might be hungry for power, control, position, stuff. This list could go on and on. I know the people of the world hunger for these things because, to them, that is all there is. But what about Christians? What about those who claim to be born again and say they are following Jesus? Could it be we are following the wrong Jesus? Here’s what I mean. I’m afraid an awful lot of self-professing Christians follow a Jesus of their own making. A Jesus who meets their every desire, keeps them out of harm’s way, and tucks them safely into bed every night. A “genie-in-a-bottle Jesus”, if you will. Perhaps if we learned to desire more of Jesus Himself instead of the things Jesus can give us, we would be so full of the Spirit that we wouldn’t be hungry. Wouldn’t that be great?

Be blessed and then go be a blessing . . . Bro. Andy
