Bears on the Path

April 28, 2024

Proverbs 17:12 cautions, “Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool in his folly.” If you are hiking in the Smoky Mountains and suddenly come upon a bear, that encounter could turn out really bad and really fast. If you are hiking in the Smoky Mountains and suddenly come upon two bear cubs but you don’t see the cub’s mama, your day could turn out even worse. History is replete with examples of humans who got between a mama bear and her cubs. Do you know what’s worse than being stuck between a mad mama bear and her babies? Solomon tells us it’s worse to be a fool caught up in his or her foolishness than to be treed by a mad mama bear. Scripture doesn’t use the word fool lightly. Usually, when the Bible refers to a fool, it is referring to a person who has forsaken God and gone off on his or her own understanding. If we are honest, haven’t we all been fools at one time or another. I’m pretty sure if anyone reading this ever got caught between a mama bear and her young’uns and survived to tell the story, he would do whatever he could to not get caught in that same situation again. Unfortunately, we humans tend to be hard-headed and quite often, instead staying right smackdab in the middle of God’s will, we wander to the left or right and follow our own path. Pretty soon, here comes that bear family again! Today’s lessons are these. When you go hiking in the Smokies, stay on the trail and look out for bears. When you go hiking through life, stay on God’s path and look out for bears. Any way you slice the cheese, those bears might be pretty to look at, but not much fun to tangle with.

Be blessed and then go be a blessing . . . Bro. Andy
