Are You Fishing for Jesus?

May 26, 2024

Many, many years ago, Ray Stevens put out a song titled “Would Jesus Wear a Rolex?” The gist of the song pokes fun of all the many preachers who, on their TV shows, continually ask for money while at the same time having multiple houses, expensive cars, airplanes and wearing expensive jewelry while they do their begging. There is a line in the song that asks if Jesus would “have a second home in Palm Springs and try to hide his worth…take money from the poor folks when HE comes back again, and admit He’s talked to all those preachers who say they’ve been talking to Him.” While I enjoy listening to that little tune, I have to admit it really is sad that these preachers (and others) bring God into their business enterprises in order to make a buck or two or millions. While I am sure Jesus wouldn’t wear a Rolex and I am sickened by false teachers and preachers who blaspheme the name of God, I am convinced there is another group of so-called Christians who may be an even bigger stumbling block to the world. These are the people who say they are “Christians” with their mouths and then live their lives any way other than Christ-like. Oh, they may say the right words and even have some correct theological knowledge. They may even “believe” Jesus is God, came to earth and died an atoning death on the cross and then was raised from the dead. They might understand the theory of theology, but y’all, so do the demons! It is my prayer that those who call themselves Christ followers (starting with me) would not only talk the talk, but would also walk the walk. Brothers and sisters, we have been charged with the greatest commission the world has ever known and that mission is to go make disciples. I read a great quote this morning and I have no clue where it originated, but I’m gonna borrow it. I almost said I was going to steal it, but then I remembered the subject of this particular Plank’s Ponderings and decided to use the word borrow instead of steal. No matter the verb, I will leave you with this thought about the great commission. “If you ain’t fishing, you ain’t following.”

Be blessed and then go fishing!....Bro. Andy
