What if, instead of shaking our heads at the woman with purple hair and three small children running amok, we asked her if she needed any help? What if instead of lecturing folks, we actually lived like Jesus…all the time, not just “at church”? What if rich folks could change places with poor folks and live in each other’s shoes for a month? What if, black folks, white folks, Indian folks and Asian folks could change places with one another and live in each other’s skin for a month? What if country folks and city folks could change places with one another and live in each other’s culture for a month? What if instead of turning on our T.V. or our computer or our smartphone, we went over to our neighbor’s house and sat down on the porch with them for a while? What if instead of complaining about how bad everything around us is, we took some time to volunteer at a hospital, or a homeless shelter, or a daycare center? What if instead of wondering if all those cars parked at our neighbor’s house are a drug deal in progress, we actually took the time to find out about our neighbors and learned about their family and their life? Do we even know their names? What if instead of complaining about and criticizing that church down the street for the way they “do church”, we took an afternoon to join them in sharing Jesus with the lost in our neighborhood? What if instead of complaining about everything that is going wrong in our schools, our churches, our neighborhoods, our country and our world, we actually became part of the solution instead? What if?
