The Anchor that Holds!

I looked at a picture of myself this morning, taken when I was in my early twenties. I had hair, and my hair was black! I wasn’t fat in those days either. In fact, about that time in my life, I hiked to the pinnacle of the Chimney Tops in the Smoky Mountains. A lot has changed since then. I’m older, grayer, bigger, and in worse shape. I’m not sure what happened. It seems like just a few weeks ago I was jogging in 5K races, mowing my yard with a push mower, and unloading food supply trucks three times a week at McDonald's. To say I’ve changed a bit is an understatement. I can really relate to the guy who said, “I see some old man that I don’t recognize in my mirror every morning.” I’m not the only person or thing that has changed since then. In those days, I drove a big, green, Pontiac Bonneville with a hounds-tooth roof. The faster I drove, the smoother it rode. Computers were just becoming a thing back in the day, and cell phones were still a few years away. Times were simpler then and, in some ways, better. Maybe it is just me misremembering, but fifty years ago (did I really just type that), it seemed that things, including change, moved at a slower pace. Today things are changing at an alarming speed. So fast, in fact, that it’s hard to keep up. If a person isn’t careful, he or she can get overwhelmed. My bible verse of the day provides us with some comfort. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” Hebrews 13:8. Isn’t it comforting to know that no matter how fast we or the world around us changes, the One whom we depend on to lead us through those changes is steady, unchangeable, and immovable? So, kids, hang on for the ride. It’s full of hills, valleys, twists, and turns. Enjoy the ride, and do your best to savor it, because no matter what changes your life's ride brings, with Jesus Christ, your anchor holds.
